Ethics ReviewAustralia has a transparent and efficent regulatory system for the conduct of clinical research. All clinical trials must be submitted to the Australian equivalent of an Independent Ethics Committee (IEC) – a Human Research Ethics Committee (HREC).The requirements of the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) for HRECs exceed those of ICH GCP. The NHMRC is a federal government committee that, amongst other duties, oversees HRECs in Australia. The NHMRC is independent of the TGA
Nucleus Network utilises two HRECs - Alfred Hospital and Austin Hospital Ethics boards.
Alfred Ethics
The Alfred Centre for Clinical Studies facility has an Independent Ethics Committee onsite. The Alfred Hospital Ethics Committee, allows Nucleus Network to manage the entire ethics submissions, follow up amendments and report writing to the ethics committee according to Good Clinical Practise. This ethics committee provides:

- Monthly meetings
- Initial submission by email
- Full submission - 7 days later
- First Research Sub-Committee Review - 7 days later
- Final Ethics Committee Review - 14 days later
- Amendments are handled outside scheduled meetings

Austin Ethics
The Austin Centre for Clinical Studies utilises the Austin Research Ethics Unit which provides administrative support to the Austin Health committees involved in approving research (human and animal) undertaken through Austin Health. These are the Human Research Ethics Committee, the Drug Trial Sub-committee, The Non Drug Scientific review Committee, the Animal Ethics Committee and the Bio-safety Committee.
